Six years after the release of the lackluster EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS, which bombed at the box office but managed to find a following on cable TV, Michael Pare returns as New Jersey rock 'n' roller Eddie Wilson (shades of Bruce Springsteen, whose style is unashamedly aped by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, who provide the words and music for Pare's lip-synching). His dreams of superstardom cut short by a ruthless record producer, Eddie dropped out of sight after an apparently fatal car wreck in the original. Beginning years later, the sequel finds Eddie living in Montreal under a new identity. When the album he recorded way back in the 60s is finally released, Eddiemania sweeps the US, and Eddie decides to form new band, though he refuses to acknowledge that he is the much-beloved rocker still rumored to be alive. Plagued by a miserable script and countless implausibilities, EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS II is just barely entertaining. The only point in the film's favor is its interesting concept; otherwise, EDDIE II is marred by mediocre acting (none of the actors is really bad), a nondescript style, and a definite overabundance of unexceptional musical numbers. leave a comment
