1986, Movie, R, 92 mins

Austrian director Dornhelm here tries to capture the desperation and hope of the aspiring young talents who live in Echo Park, a rundown section of Los Angeles. The film centers on Dey, a single mother and would-be actress. Working in a sleazy bar and struggling to make ends meet, Dey runs an ad for a roommate. The chipper Hulce, a pizza deliveryman who shows a smidgen of talent as a songwriter, responds. He is immediately attracted to Dey and becomes a father figure for her 8-year-old son, Walker. ECHO PARK has its heart in the right place. Director Dornhelm manages to capture the hopelessness of those countless aspiring youngsters who are willing to sacrifice everything for the smallest break. Unfortunately, Dornhelm's good intentions aren't enough to overcome the insipid dialog. Nothing here rings true except the basic premise. These characters act as if they're in a movie instead of trying to land a part in one. leave a comment
