1937, Movie, NR, 91 mins

starstarstarstar
Offbeat adventure tale starring Homolka (in his first Hollywood role after leaving Gaumont-British), Fitzgerald, and Milland as aimless beachcombers hired by an island commission to remove a smallpox-infected ship and its cargo from the island and sail it to Australia, where it is to be destroyed. When they discover that the ship's cargo is champagne, they decide to sail the vessel to Peru, where they can sell the liquor and the ship for a tidy profit. A monkey wrench is thrown in the works when Farmer, the daughter of the ship's dead captain, turns young Milland's head and he drops out of the plan. A typhoon nearly wrecks the ship and they are forced to anchor off an uncharted island run by the psychopathic Nolan, who kills Homolka and Fitzgerald with a Winchester in one hand and a Bible in the other, with Milland and Farmer going free. Fitzgerald steals the show as the salty vagrant. The novelette the film was based on was written by Robert Louis Stevenson and his stepson, Lloyd Osbourne, in Samoa, where Stevenson spent the last five years of his life.
