With its porno plot, Undressed production values and ersatz Will & Grace banter that manages to be crude without being the least bit funny, Q. Allan Brocka's debut is a tasteless comedy that nevertheless leaves a nasty flavor on the tongue. Political-science major Caleb Peterson (Scott Lunsford) is despondent after getting dumped by his kinky girlfriend, Tiffani (Rebekah Kochlan), for being too nice (he just can't pull off a convincing enough rape fantasy), and turns to his gay best friend and roommate, Kyle (American Idol also-ran Jim Verraros), for consolation. The problem, Kyle intuits, is that hunky Caleb is straight; if he were gay, he'd get hit on constantly by insecure straight women who prefer the company of unthreatening gay men. Take, for instance, Kyle's friend Gwen (Emily Stiles), an attractive blonde with a knack for falling in love with latent homosexuals, guys like her now-out-and-about ex-boyfriend Marc (Ryan Carnes), a handsome pianist whom Kyle's been stalking for years. Hoping to fix up his frustrated friend with Gwen, Kyle introduces Caleb as his gay roommate. But the plan quickly backfires: Instead of hooking Gwen, Caleb snares Marc, an unforeseen development that throws Kyle into a paroxysm of jealousy. Caleb, however, agrees to continue the deception and date Marc in order to get closer Gwen, with whom Marc lives; Kyle, meanwhile, sees the sticky situation as a means to see more of Marc. Guess who winds up with whom? Complicating matters further is the fact that Tiffani lives right upstairs from Gwen and Marc. Brocka made a name for himself in certain circles with the sick but undeniably funny animated Lego short "Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World," which was released as part of SPIKE AND MIKE'S 2000 SICK & TWISTED FESTIVAL OF ANIMATION. But what's funny with plastic people is often just plain gross played out by live actors. The main problem is that Brocka doesn't seem to know the difference between provocative/sexy and lewd/offensive, and the screenplay's icks and yucks far outnumber the guffaws. Worse, he woefully miscalculates the charms of his characters: Gwen is a perverse, voyeuristic shrew; Kyle is a shameless gay stereotype who cracks Anne Frank jokes; and Caleb, far from being worthy of a date with either man or woman, is a spineless dullard with a terrible haircut who deserves to die alone. leave a comment --Ken Fox
