EATING RAOUL meets CARRY ON... cliches in this scattershot satirical farce. The setting: A fascist London overrun by vile yuppies whose excesses are embodied in a posh, pretentious restaurant called Bastards, whose menu includes delicacies like baby panda fried in honey; the name seems to have been chosen just so the hostess can answer the phone, "Bastards, may I help you?" Sexually ambiguous waitperson Alex (Alan Pellay) loses his job after mouthing off to a customer, and goes around knocking on doors in search of fellow outcasts and disenfranchised workers interested in starting a revolution, a la Robin Hood and his merry socialist men (complete with bows and arrows). Meanwhile, Home Secretary Nosher (Nosher Powell) — a cockney former boxer who wears lime-green suits, swills Red Stripe beer from the can at dinner withthe Queen (you know he burps at the table) and probably could, if left to his own devices, solve the worlds problems in a week: "Alright, 'oo started it?" he barks before sorting out some terrorists. Peace in the Middle East? "You, give him back his country! And you — smarten up!" Nosher, of course, has enemies among the English upper classes, and intelligence agent Commander Fortune (Ronald Allen) — who's really a KGB spy answering to general Karpov (David Beard) — attempts to use Alex and his naive anarchists to bring Nosher down. It all culminates in the occupation of Bastards, which Alex and co. rename "Eat the Rich," reconfiguring the menu appropriately. This coarse, gleefully vulgar stab at the excesses of Margaret Thatcher's England has its roots in a politically oriented English troupe called the Comic Strip: Director Peter Richardson, co-screenwriter Pete Richens and several cast members all came out of the group. There are cameos by celebrities ranging from Paul McCartney to softcore starlet Koo Stark, and fans of British TV comedy will recognize faces from The Young Ones, Absolutely Fabulous and other programs. leave a comment
