Based on real-life occurrences and set in an Irish border town, this restrained comedy opens as Vinnie (Stephen Brennan) and brother-in-law Arthur (Eamon Morrissey), who have lost their factory jobs, are captivated by the thrilling motorcycle stunts in Elvis Presley's ROUSTABOUT and decide to build their own "Wall of Death" in Vinnie's backyard, much to the annoyance of Vinnie's long-suffering, pregnant wife, Nora (Catherine Byrne). To finance the construction, Vinnie and Arthur turn to smuggling and meet Boots (Niall Toibin), who is enthralled with Vinnie's wall and promises to get TV coverage for the project. Their dreams of fame and fortune begin. Taking its title from the famous question posed in T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" ("Do I dare to eat a peach?"), this is the story of people who dare to dream. Although its plot is a little thin and develops slowly, EAT THE PEACH presents charming, believable characters who create an engaging portrait of the indomitable human spirit. Brennan, Morrissey, and Byrne, all veterans of the Irish stage, turn in nicely understated performances, and the film is full of nicely drawn secondary characters. leave a comment
