Based on Irwin Shaw's "Education of the Heart" and directed by Jacques Tourneur, EASY LIVING is the melodramatic tale of an aging star halfback (Victor Mature) for the fictitious New York Chiefs who knows retirement is imminent. His adjustment to this inevitability is complicated by the loss of the college coaching job he hoped would be his but which is won by a friend (Sonny Tufts). To make matters worse, he discovers that he has a heart condition, which should keep him off the field but doesn't because he is afraid that his selfish wife (Lizabeth Scott) will leave him if he's no longer in the limelight. All along he is supported by the team's pretty secretary (Lucille Ball), who is in love with him but contents herself with helping him through his difficulties, finally persuading him to leave the gridiron for good. Eschewing the flashy, fast-paced game action of most football films, Tourneur focuses instead on his characters and the result is a moody, generally well-crafted film. Mature is quite good as the fading star who would be quite content to leave his glory years behind but instead struggles to live up to the expectations of others. leave a comment
