Fitzgerald lends himself to ethnic stereotype in this drama about a likeable-but-shiftless New York City Irishman with a penchant for the ponies. The whole film consists of Fitzgerald staying one step ahead of his creditors, nosing into his daughter's love life, and placing $2 bets at the
track in the hope that he will eventually hit the big numbers. The Irish come in for some amusing pokes in Fitzgerald's character, but they are scarcely offensive. Nothing much grows in this bit of the auld sod.
