Two generations of wine vintners in California's Napa Valley battle during the Prohibition era. Rains is the older man who believes in his craft, while his grandson, Hudson, is in the business solely to make money and wants to cut the family in on the thriving bootlegging business. When his cousin Simmons arrives from England, the two have an affair but she is unsure of Hudson. Unfortunately the film meanders from these two main plot lines into various subplots involving a pregnant worker whose child is perhaps fathered by Hudson, and anti-Semitic and anti-Italian themes. The end result is a rambling film that never finds focus, delivered in an epic, wide-screen presentation. The location shooting is beautiful and Hudson gives a good performance, but the film lacks cohesiveness. It's another example of "big" not always meaning "better." leave a comment
