A moving British reconstruction of the defeat that turned into a moral victory at Dunkirk, this film shows the events through the eyes of three characters. Mills plays a sharp cockney corporal who, along with a few others, gets separated from his unit, forcing him and his men to work their way back to safe soil on their own. Lee is a cynical newspaper correspondent who eventually helps out in the evacuation and loses his life. Attenborough plays a complacent civilian who is shaken into a new consciousness by his participation in the event. Although well done, this has a bit too much of the stiff-upper-lip cheerleading that marked most films of this type. leave a comment
