This plucky romantic comedy, written and directed by Oliver Robins, best known for playing Robby in POLTERGEIST (1982), manages to be fun and appealing in spite of its complete disposability. Two cute young couples in the throes of agonizing break-ups: Will (Seth Peterson) is an indifferent law student whose girlfriend, Lara (Dana Barron), ditches him because he's more interested in classic car restoration than studying. Will's zany sidekick George (David Robinson) suffers a similar fate when his true love, Heather (Amy Loubalu), decides he's too much of a loser to be taken seriously. The women are devotees of a relationship self-help book called The Law, a fount of Machiavellian wisdom modeled on real-life bestseller The Rules. The book details how to scare ex-boyfriends into being better in a relationship. Will and George fall hapless prey to every manipulative ploy their ex-girlfriends can devise; try to manipulate them in return; and console each other in classic sad-guy fashion (lots of drinking and overwrought male bonding). The movie's familiarity is much of its fun: It's easy to sympathize with characters we've met countless times before, both in other movies and in real life. Robins' writing is neither conspicuously smart nor completely inane — at times the dialogue sounds like a Kevin Smith on a not-so-clever day. You won't find anything new, interesting or exceptional here, but you also won't curse yourself for sitting through this mercifully brief amusement. leave a comment --Scott Jacobson
