Overworked soapsuds, but Andrews's performance is strong enough to turn what could have been an insufferable property into thoughtful drama. Andrews is a world-famous violinist married to Bates, an equally acclaimed orchestra conductor. When Andrews experiences temporary paralysis, a doctor diagnoses her problem as multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease that will eventually kill her. Forced to contemplate the inevitable, Andrews must face not only her physical condition but the changes that the disease engenders in her various relationships. Director Konchalovsky turned away from his usual directorial style, and as a result his work feels a trifle uneven. The diluted script, based on the play by Kempinski, relies on a plethora of characters to open up the play. As a result, some of the plot's major points get swamped. The talented ensemble deliver quite well in this rare and effective drama about the artist's relationship to his art. leave a comment
