A confused western essay on racism stars Garner as a civilian guide and Travers as an uptight cavalry lieutenant escorting a shipment of ammunition to an isolated fort. Also along on the trail are Poitier, a former Army sergeant now breaking horses for the military, and Andersson, Travers' wife, who was raped by Apaches and subsequently gave birth to a half-breed child who becomes the subject of racial tension. Garner himself is bent on revenge for the scalping of his Comanche wife. Most of the action is derived from a series of Indian attacks upon the caravan. The film contains a disturbing amount of graphic violence and suffers greatly from an inappropriate musical score by Hefti. Director Nelson made another, even bloodier western dealing with racism in 1970, SOLDIER BLUE, which also suffers from poor scripting. leave a comment
