1951, Movie, NR, 87 mins

This above-average Civil War drama, with unusual twists provided by talented director-production designer William Cameron Menzies, follows cadets Clay (James Craig), Will (Guy Madison), and Braxton (Craig Stevens) as they graduate from West Point and later meet in Atlanta just before shots are fired at Fort Sumter. Will fights for the North, Clay and Braxton for the South, and they meet again three years later when Sherman makes his march to the sea through Georgia. The Union advance is halted by a mountaintop battery, manned by Clay and 20 Confederate soldiers, while on a nearby plantation, Clay's wife, Kathy (Barbara Payton), spies on the Yankees, including Will, and delivers information to her husband. Espionage, romance, and battle action are combined to produce a unique and exciting picture, and Menzies, who had won an Oscar for art direction for GONE WITH THE WIND, does a fine job in bringing it all together. leave a comment
