This was Ladd's first production under his own Jaguar label. Working in collaboration with veteran western director Daves (BROKEN ARROW), Ladd produced one of his best efforts since SHANE. Ladd, a tough Indian fighter, is presidentially appointed to make peace with the troublesome Modoc Indians of California. But his stagecoach is ambushed by renegade Bronson before its arrival at Fort Klamath, and Ladd must resort to gunplay to save his life and those of the other passengers, including pretty Dalton. Ladd and Dalton's budding romance angers Pavan, sister of the friendly Modoc chief Caruso; she has been Ladd's sweetheart since childhood. Despite Ladd's warnings that Bronson is dangerous, Pavan accompanies the renegade on a mission on which she is killed. Ladd explodes and tracks the bloody killer to his lair, where the two go at each other with gun, knife, and bare hands, Ladd finally disposing of the venomous Bronson. DRUM BEAT packs plenty of action and gives generous consideration to the Indian perspective, an attitude fostered by director Daves, who took pride in his pioneer heritage. This was the first film where Bronson received a major part and he performed it well. It was for this film that he discarded his given name of Buchinsky and took Bronson. Based on true incidents occurring in Oregon, circa 1869, DRUM BEAT was filmed on location in Coconino National Forest in Northern Arizona. Ladd, of course, is the whole show and he renders a strong, believable portrayal of a man hard at the edges but understanding at the core. leave a comment
