Rooney, a mechanic and race car driver, is chosen by two bank robbers (McCarthy and Kelly) to be their driver for a heist in Palm Springs, California, because he can handle the mountain back roads. For bait, they use McCarthy's girl friend, Foster, and she convinces Rooney to do the job. After the robbery is completed, Kelly forces Rooney at gunpoint to drive to a deserted location, but Rooney crashes the car, killing Kelly. Injured, Rooney then returns to McCarthy's hideout and kills him when he finds him beating Foster. The police arrive and arrest them both. A crisply done film noir with Rooney taken in by the universal emotional state that was at the root of many noir heroes' problems, loneliness. leave a comment
