The ultra-low budget feature debut of the remarkable Abel Ferrara is disturbing and powerful, evincing the promise that would be fulfilled in MS. 45 (1981). Hiding behind the pseudonym "Jimmy Laine," Ferrara stars as Reno, an alienated Manhattan painter who lives in terror of winding up like his derelict father. Suffering from hallucinations in which his paintings whisper to him, and driven to distraction by a raucous punk band that rehearses downstairs, Reno vents his frustrations by taking to the streets and murdering bums with a power drill. As his rage spirals out of control, Reno moves from killing derelicts to slaying those in his own life who have angered him--namely girlfriend Carol (Carolyn Marz) and libidinous art dealer Dalton Briggs (Harry Schultz). A bleak, often repugnant rumination on the harsh realities of urban life, DRILLER KILLER will offend tender sensibilities. But Ferrara is already a distinctive and conscientious talent behind the camera, unmistakably concerned with more than gore-filled exploitation. Turning budget restrictions to his advantage, he and cinematographer Ken Kelsch shot much of the film with a hand-held camera, giving the picture an immediate, documentary urgency. leave a comment
