A visually stunning fantasy about Connery (son of actor Sean), the teenage son of New York socialite parents Blanc and Boorman (daughter of producer John). One evening after his parents have gone out on the town, Connery lets his imagination run wild and is whisked away (via an elevator that burrows through the earth) to another planet. In this fantasy heavily influenced by Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Connery soon discovers Captain Nemo's submarine, the Nautilus, and his man-monkey assistant (Pinon). They embark on a number of breathtaking adventures and meet some memorable storybook characters. The film has excellent production values--dreamy and magical set design, superb camera work, and convincing special effects. Unfortunately, director Selignac's attention is focused on detail and fantasy instead of on story and acting. leave a comment
