With Columbia's success in making opera singer Grace Moore a movie star, RKO got the most popular opera star of the time, Pons, to star in I DREAM TOO MUCH. RKO pulled out all the stops for this production in an attempt to outshine Columbia and Moore, but, even with Fonda as the leading man, the film is just a minor effort. Husband Fonda pushes his wife, Pons, into a singing career. She's reluctant but tries and becomes a big success. This sours Fonda, a struggling opera composer, and Pons uses her new-found influence to get Fonda's opera turned into a successful musical comedy. Once this is done she slows her singing career to start a family. Songs include: "The Jockey on the Carousel," "I'm the Echo," "I Got Love" and the title song (Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields), "Bell Song" (from the opera Lakme by Leo Delibes, with libretto by Gondinet and Gille), and "Caro Nome" (from Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto). This film featured up-and-coming Fonda in his first non-bucolic screen role. It also had actress Ball in her second featured-player role; much later, she was to buy the studio. leave a comment
