Not a great picture -- not by a long shot -- but the many and various parts of Finn Taylor's quirky black comedy do add up to something rather appealing. David Arquette stars as Terry, a despondent young voyeur who spends his abundant free time with his binoculars trained on the tattooed -- and often topless -- cutie across the way. He decides to end his misery by taking a plunge off a bridge, but is stopped by Nick (Brad Hunt), a terminally ill petty thief with only a few weeks to live. Nick proposes a deal: If Terry foots the bill so Nick can live out his final fantasies, Nick will either make him the beneficiary on his life insurance policy, or put a bullet in his head -- whichever Terry prefers. Terry agrees, and tags along while Nick goes nude bowling, drops acid at an amusement park and takes a sentimental journey back to his troubled family. Among the most glaring problems is Hunt's limitations as an actor: He's meant to be the film's emotional center and it doesn't hold, leaving a very strange Arquette to carry the film. He does so with aplomb and, with a little help from the wonderful Cathy Moriarty as Nick's party-girl aunt (an ex-stripper who proudly keeps her pasties and G-strings framed and mounted on her living room wall), takes the film to some dark places Taylor may not have envisioned. leave a comment --Ken Fox
