An Arthurian-type legend is marvelously re-created when Galen (Peter MacNicol), sorcerer's apprentice to Ulrich (Ralph Richardson), a great wizard, bungles his way to ridding the kingdom of a monstrous, fire-spitting dragon. King Tyrian (John Hallam) has made an evil pact whereby he will sacrifice the virgins of his land to the dragon if it will leave the kingdom in relative peace. When Princess Elspeth (Chloe Salaman), his brave daughter, volunteers her own life, Ulrich and Galen attempt to save her, even though the wizard is dying and his magic fading. Like EXCALIBUR, this film has smoky atmosphere, medieval sets, and rugged terrain strange enough to suggest far-off mythic lands; moreover, its special effects are positively staggering. The giant computerized dragon alone is worth viewing. But DRAGONSLAYER profits from spirited direction and camera work plus the expert Richardson at its nucleus. Failing to capture the fancy of either the teenage market or adult action-fantasy fans, however, DRAGONSLAYER was a major disappointment at the box office, returning just $6 million on an $18 million investment. With terror prevalent and gory violence in spots, this fable is not for young viewers. leave a comment
