According to medieval legend, if a dragon shares its heart with a mortal, that human will become an omnipotent warrior. Although dragons are now nearly extinct, one serpent named Drake has survived under the care of Friar Peter (John Woodnutt) at his monastery. When a lowly stable boy named Geoff (Chris Masterson) discovers Drake, he quickly befriends the creature. Meanwhile, back at the palace, Geoff's idol, Sir Osric (Harry Van Gorkum) reveals his true colors by usurping the power of the King. When Geoff, who dreams of knighthood and deeds of derring-do, foolishly takes Drake for a spin around the court, he attracts the attention of two factions: Sir Osric, who immediately realizes that Drake can consolidate his authority; and Mystic Kwan (Henry O) and Princess Lian (Rona Figueroa), who hope to test Drake's purity and prevent Osric from abusing the creature's powers. With its junior league mythologizing, dexterous stuntwork and age-old pratfalls, this lighthearted look at the Dark Ages provides suitable entertainment for fans of medieval fables, but one's overall enjoyment will doubtless depend on one's tolerance of adorable fantasy creatures. Cuddly as a Beanie Baby, Drake bats its eyelashes in a manner calculated to elicit maximum squeals from moppets. For the teen crowd, there's the action-packed saga of a humble lad who faces the risks of rising above his station and, as the life lessons pile up like — what else? — dragon dung, eventually learns that there's more to valor than conquest. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
