Unsatisfying sequel to DRACULA (1931), with many of that film's cast members reprising their earlier roles. Holden, as filmdom's first female vampire, is the late Count's daughter. Van Sloan has been nailed by Scotland Yard for having done Dracula in, but the Yard doesn't believe in the supernatural so Van Sloan faces prosecution for the deed. Otto Kruger, a psychiatrist (or "alienist," as they used to say) working on behalf of Van Sloan, unearths Holden's true identity and is about to be killed by her when Pichel, her servant, kills the vampiress instead. Pichel is almost a parody of horror-movie servants here, with hair slicked down and parted in the middle, his face whitened by what must have been a ton of rice-powder makeup. A few shocks, a couple of laughs, and the brief appearance of gossip columnist Hedda Hopper are all that distinguish this film--little enough. leave a comment
