Dr. Rhythm

1938, Movie, NR, 80 mins

Loosely based on an O. Henry story, this tepid musical fails on many levels. It has no songs that anyone will recall while Crosby seems to sleepwalk through it. Four alumni of Brooklyn's P.S. 43 meet for their yearly reunion at the Central Park Zoo at midnight (why they choose this place at this time is never made clear). Crosby is a wealthy doctor, Devine is a New York City cop, Holloway is an ice cream vendor, and Rufe Davis is the zookeeper. Crosby takes one of Devine's assignments to act as a cop-bodyguard to Mary Carlisle, which results, of course, in his falling in love with her. Bea Lillie is the standout performer and almost saves the movie with her clowning in a burlesque of a gypsy operetta at the Policeman's Ball. Songs: "My Heart Is Taking Lessons," "This Is My Night To Dream," "On the Sentimental Side," "Doctor Rhythm," "Only a Gypsy Knows," "Trumpet Player's Lament," "P.S. 43" (Johnny Burke, James V. Monaco). leave a comment
