This sequel to THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES carries over the tongue-in-cheek approach of its predecessor and devises an even more outlandish series of murders. After spending three years in suspended animation lying next to his beloved late wife (Munro), the infamous doctor (Price) awakes to find his mansion destroyed and a sacred Egyptian scroll, which reveals the way to an underground river containing the elixir of life, stolen. Price suspects that his archenemy (Quarry) is behind the theft and with the help of his beautiful assistant (Kemp), who inexplicably is alive after being killed in the original, recovers the scroll and sets out for Egypt. Quarry, who is several hundred years old and needs the elixir to continue living, gives chase. This is where the fun comes in, as Price is forced to dispatch Quarry's men in a variety of ingenious ways. The ending was left wide open for another sequel, but the film failed at the box office, so a third Phibes film wasn't made. Instead, Price spent much of the rest of his career duplicating the Phibes format in films like THEATRE OF BLOOD (1972) and MADHOUSE (1974). leave a comment
