Eddie Murphy passed on this gag-filled entry into the Fox comedy franchise, which is none the worse for his absence. Desperate to fit in with her peers, little Maya Dolittle (Kyla Pratt) downplays the ability she inherited from her father, but her efforts to infiltrate the in crowd are undermined by her four-legged pals — after they crash a socially crucial pool party, her reputation as an oddball is cemented. Flummoxed by her daughter's behavior, Mrs. Dolittle (Kristen Wilson) sends Maya to a dude ranch owned by her old friend, Jud (John Amos). Maya's self-esteem plummets when she sees her fellow dude ranchers, a sorry collection of dorks and discipline cases, and while Jud's hunky son, Bo (Walker Howard), makes her heart flutter, tough New York chick Brooklyn Webster (Luciana Carro) claims dibs and warns Maya to back off. The city kids prove hopeless at chores and equestrian skills, but Maya's primary concern is that no-one discover that she's the animal-whisperer. So naturally, Maya's pet pooch turns up to join her at the old corral. Maya learns that Jud's ranch is facing foreclosure, and the animals expect her to intercede. If Bo could assemble a team of ropers and wranglers capable of winning at the local rodeo — by this point, the outcast teens have blossomed into regular cowpokes — — the prize money would pay his father's debt, and Maya's animal magnetism could be just the edge they need. Hugh Lofting would probably bark his disapproval at this updated variation on his sweet fable, but screenwriter Nina Colman achieves a nice balance between broad humor and teen-empowerment cheerleading. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
