Dr. Cyclops

A fun-filled film from the director of the original KING KONG which casts Dekker as a mad scientist who gets kicks out of shrinking people to one-fifth their normal size. Their plight pits them against an array of obstacles which were once taken for granted as everyday, normal-sized objects. Film has some wonderful special effects, but the subject of tiny folks was dealt with much more interestingly in THE DEVIL DOLL (1936) and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957). The situation is basically unexplored in this picture, wasting a number of opportunities. Unexplainably absent is the obligatory point-of-view shot from the Lilliputians' height. It all looks so familiar now, but by placing the film in its historical perspective--novel special effects, Technicolor, and the directorial pull of Schoedsack--one can understand its sensational attraction at its time. The film's effects were nominated for an Oscar, but lost to THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD. leave a comment
