In this film based on an 1870 ballet by Delibes and Nuitter, lonely Dr. Coppelius (Walter Slezak) creates a companion for himself--a beautiful dancing mechanical doll (Claudia Corday). Unfortunately, an amorous village lad, Franz (Caj Selling), spies the doll dancing on the balcony and
falls in love with the doctor's creation. Coppelius kidnaps Franz and attempts to implant his soul into the doll, but Franz's jealous girl friend (Corday, playing a dual role) comes to his rescue. "Coppelia," the ballet that inspired this enthralling film, was itself derived from one of the tales
of Hoffmann.
