This edgy thriller tracks a deeply troubled man’s fall from grace. The problem is, he starts out pretty low on the food chain, so his short trip to the bottom is hardly the stuff of compelling suspense. John Hunter (Matt Schulze), tortured since childhood by the gangland murder of his policeman father and innocent mother, infiltrates a notorious criminal guild by posing as a hit man. But he has his own secret mission — to exact revenge on the evil mobster responsible for his parents' death. Under direct orders from a mysterious man at the top, Hunter picks off various lowlifes and thugs with increasing inner conflict. Does his personal vendetta justify the slaughter of other human beings, no matter how depraved they may be? Claustrophobic low-budget sets and cliched noir-esque lighting create an atmosphere of B-movie tackiness rather than gritty emotional turmoil, and the meager plot contains more holes than Swiss cheese. How exactly do these indiscriminate murder assignments lead Hunter to his desired goal? He seems to know from the get-go that the man he works for is the culprit he’s after, so why doesn’t he just rub the guy out and spare us the rigmarole? No doubt he holds off because there’s got to be a dash of romance in this tale of rage and revenge. Sure enough, our determined anti-hero falls for the boss’s moll, a wanton seductress who leads him temporarily astray. Fortunately, the amorous detour hastens the films climax quicker, sparing viewers more pointless killing. leave a comment --Rachel Liebling
