Very funny Kaye comedy which sees the star as a lowly GI stationed in England during WW II shortly before the invasion of Normandy. One day he is caught impersonating England's most important battle commander (for whom he is an exact double) for laughs, and the military intelligence community decides to use him to confuse the Nazis as to the whereabouts of the general. Kaye agrees to the assignment and manages to fool the general's loyal chauffeur Dors into believing he is actually the general. He is not so lucky with Wynter, the estranged wife of the general, but she agrees to keep quiet for the good of the country. When the real general is killed in a plane crash, Kaye is told to continue the deception so that the Nazis will think he still lives. Eventually it is revealed that Dors is actually a Nazi spy, and she kidnaps Kaye and takes him to Germany to be interrogated. Kaye give the Nazis false information and manages to escape, but not before having to don a series of ridiculous disguises (including a hilarious impersonation of Marlene Dietrich). Finally Kaye makes it back to England where he exposes one of the deceased general's closest friends--another general, Evans--as the chief Nazi spy in Britain, and the Allied invasion of Normandy proceeds without a hitch. Songs by Kaye's long-time wife, Sylvia Fine, include "Darlin' Meggie," "The Mackenzie Hielanders," and "On the Double." leave a comment
