A low-budget but worthy entry from Canada. DOUBLE HAPPINESS concerns a Hong Kong family in modern Vancouver's Chinatown, with debuting filmmaker Mina Shum bringing a fresh point-of-view to a familiar account of clashing cultures. While Jade Li (Sandra Oh) and younger sister Pearl (Frances You) are assimilated Chinese-Canadians, their parents remain devoted to ancient customs and rituals. The sitcom atmosphere of their lively household is tempered by the memory of absent son Winston, utterly disowned by father Quo Li (Stephen M.D. Chang) for straying too far from ancestral ways. Quo regards Jade's career choice -- acting -- as a passing phase, while mom Li (Alannah Ong) tries to match her with a succession of nice Chinese boys. Farcical complications ensue in an occasionally gauche but consistently lively comedy. leave a comment
