Although this escapist thriller hinges on a gimmick, the hook is a nifty one: When the wrong woman gets kidnapped, her employer won't pay for her! Fearful of threats to his family in America, visiting Japanese businessman Ozaki hires Maria (Maya Hoshino) to pose as his daughter, Lisa (Rei Kikukawa). In the course of protecting the phony daughter, Ozaki's bodyguard/chauffeur Luke Campbell (Louis Mandylor) grows fond of Maria. During a convenience store stopover, kidnappers pounce, shoot Luke's buddy, Burt (Joe Estevez), and drive off with Maria. Papa Ozaki smugly informs Luke and the police that he won't cave into the kidnappers' demands. Realizing that this intransigence means a death sentence for Maria, Luke doublecrosses his boss and snatches Ozaki's real daughter from her security staff. Appalled by her father's duplicity, Lisa cooperates with Luke and agrees to pretend that she's Luke's hostage so her tightwad daddy will cough up two million bucks. Luke figures he can fork over Lisa's ransom to pay off Maria's captor, Snake (James Russo). But negotiations get sidetracked because Lisa's security guards want a slice of the pie, and it turns out that Maria has actually engineered her abduction with her boyfriend, Snake! Lisa's guards subsequently fall out with their criminal associate, Vincent (Udo Kier), who decides to cut out the middlemen and seize the ransom for himself. Meanwhile, Luke and Lisa keep trying to deliver the millions and rescue Maria. As Maria ponders Snake's ultimatum about eliminating loose ends, it's up to poor little rich girl Lisa to save the day. Can she do it? Although this crime thriller makes mincemeat out of sound reasoning, cynics will get a buzz out of its world-view, in which expendability reigns supreme. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
