Based on the 1899 children's book by Ethel C. Pedley, this is the first in a series of Australian films about the adventures of a little girl named Dot and various outback creatures. The films' unusual look comes from the combination of animated human and animal characters superimposed over live-action backgrounds. In this tale (voice of Barbara Frawley) gets lost in the outback and befriends a kangaroo (Joan Bruce) who's lost her joey. The kangaroo allows Dot to ride in her pouch, and the pair encounter various friendly creatures — including a koala, a pair of platypi (Spike Milligan, Joan Slater) and a kookaburra bird — as well as a scary pack of dingoes and an monster called the bunyip, a traditional Austrailian bogey-beast that's half animal and half bird. Though Dot finally returns home, the ending is bittersweet: She's devastated when the kangaroo has to return to the outback, and the kindly kangaroo is never reunited with her lost child. leave a comment
