Don't Go Near The Water

1957, Movie, NR, 107 mins

This very funny satire on the Navy's public relations campaign in the Pacific (notable for one gag in which foul-mouthed Mickey Shaughnessy's speech is apparently "censored" by a continually interrupting ship's horn) is an amiable mishmash, involving some nicely done characters in a hodgepodge of plots, subplots, and sub-subplots, all fairly trivial but all quite amusing. Though Charles Walters' direction is generally excellent, the proceedings sometimes get out of control due to the abundance of talented second bananas in the cast--actors like Fred Clark and Keenan Wynn, who keep stealing scenes from the four top-billed players, none of whom is known for comedic talents. leave a comment
