Sam Katzman repeats history. In 1956 when he came out with ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK, he quickly followed it up, cashing in with DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK. In 1961 he came out with TWIST AROUND THE CLOCK, and quickly followed it up with this film, DON'T KNOCK THE TWIST. The film concerns itself with a silly story about preparations for a TV special on the twist and efforts to help a summer camp for orphans; in other words, a way to segue between a dozen musical numbers of varying quality. The best moments are the Dovells doing "The Bristol Stomp," and Gene Chandler soaring through "Duke of Earl." Checker sings a handful of songs and actually turns in a decent performance in a fairly substantial role. Songs include "Don't Knock the Twist," Kal Mann, Dave Appel, sung by Checker; "The Bristol Stomp," "Do the New Continental," Mann, Appell, sung by the Dovells; "Let's Twist a La Paloma," Mann, sung by Checker; "Little Altar Boy," Howlett Smith, sung by Vic Dana; "Yesiree," Linda Scott, sung by Scott; "Duke of Earl," Eugene Dixon, Bernice Williams, Earl Edwards, sung by Gene Chandler; "Mash Potato Time," Mann, Bernie Lowe; "Salome Twist," Robert E. Kent, Fred Karger. leave a comment
