The I Don't Care Girl

1952, Movie, NR, 78 mins

This sappy biography of an early show business star features producer Jessel (as himself) trying to find out about Eva Tanguay's background so he can make a movie of her life. He interviews those who knew her best, and the episodes are supposed to congeal into one story. They don't. The film remains flat and is little more than a singalong. Several songs have nothing to do with the plot and mar the good performances by Levant and Wayne. Gaynor is a human dynamo, but never stops for an instant to allow us to get any feel for the character she is portraying. Jack Cole's production numbers are anachronistic but well done--sort of like showing break dancing in a musical about the French Revolution. Songs include "I Don't Care" (Jean Lenox, Harry O. Sutton), "The Beale Street Blues" (W.C. Handy), "The Johnson Rag" (Jack Lawrence, Guy H. Hall, Henry Kleinkauf), "This Is My Favorite City" (Mack Gordon, Josef Myrow), "Here Comes Love Again" (Jessel, Eliot Daniel), "On the Mississippi" (Ballard MacDonald, Harry Carroll, Arthur Fields), "Hello, Frisco, Hello" (Louis A. Hirsch, Gene Buck), "Pretty Baby" (Gus Kahn, Tony Jackson, Egbert Van Alstyne), "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" (Nat D. Ayer, A. Seymour Brown), "Liebestraum" (Franz Liszt), "Piano Concerto Number One" (Liszt), "Little G Minor Fugue" (Johann Sebastian Bach), "Largo Al Factotum" (Giacchino Rossini). leave a comment
