An odd amalgam, redolent of the mistaken-identity comedies of confusion of the 1930s. Martinelli plays a humble secretary in a well-to-do household who is mistaken for the ultimate legatee of that wealth by a visiting attorney. She thinks it's true love and becomes miffed when the truth comes out. No matter, romance finds a foothold within the intrigue, so love triumphs after all. Onetime model Martinelli was "discovered" by Kirk Douglas, who cast her in THE INDIAN FIGHTER (1955). Demonstrating the actor-mobility which later became commonplace, she immediately returned to Rome to star in two Italian films, DONATELLA and RICE GIRL (AKA: RICE FIELD, 1956), the latter a rip-off of the popular BITTER RICE (1950). Oddly, DONATELLA, an Italian film, features, in speaking parts as well as in musical performances, the "Rhumba King" of the 1930s and 1940s, Xavier Cugat, and his third wife, Abbe Lane. The film is a truly cosmopolitan piece of fluff, made with an eye to the box-office potential of its varied parts, a potential which remained unrealized. leave a comment
