Kathy Bates, so memorably creepy in MISERY, delivers what may be 1995's most underrated performance in this implicitly feminist melodrama based, like MISERY, on one of Stephen King's more thoughtful novels. Bates plays the title character, a working class widow suspected of murder; Jennifer Jason Leigh is her brittle yuppie daughter, damaged by an unspeakable childhood episode.
