A Doll's House

1973, Movie, G, 95 mins

A first-rate adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's classic tale of a woman trapped in a man's world. The film is essentially a screen rendering of the successful 1971 Broadway production, a play produced by Elkins, starring his wife, Bloom, and written by Garland and Hampton. All of the above reproduce their efforts for the screen. The film, which uses almost all indoor locations, was shot after only two weeks of rehearsals. The story centers on Bloom, the pampered wife of a stuffy bank manager, Hopkins, whose attention to decorum outweighs his love for his wife. Suspense and conflict arise out of Hopkins' illness, which requires him to travel to a warmer climate to recuperate. He has no money on which to travel, so Bloom has an encounter with a disgraced lawyer turned moneylender, Elliot, who comes across with a loan to finance Hopkins' recovery. The loan is arranged without Hopkins' knowledge and is secured through the forged signature of Bloom's father. When Hopkins later fires Elliot from the bank, grounds for blackmail are laid. Bloom ends up leaving Hopkins and striking out on her own at a time when women were literally the property of men. leave a comment
