More Dogs Than Bones: Review

This star-studded caper film makes up in high spirits what it lacks in subtlety. Tipped off by a disgruntled crook, Detective Darren Cody (Peter Coyote) takes custody of his old nemesis, Mafia courier Victoria Galetti (Mercedes Ruehl), aboard a commercial airliner. Victoria, who's flying with a bag that contains a cool million dollars, switches her satchel with one belonging to an Indian tourist named Raj (Chaim Jeraffi). While Victoria dissembles for Cody's benefit, Raj's nephew, Andy (Ajay Naidu), picks up his uncle from the airport and ferries him to his downtown L.A. loft, where Raj is introduced to Andy's colorful neighbors: Graffiti artist Mary (Debi Mazar), aspiring magician Geoff (Glenn Shadix) and security guard Truman (D.B. Woodside). Uncle Raj also makes the acquaintance of Andy's talented dog, Socrates, who's fond of fetching small items and burying them. Meanwhile, Victoria uses her one phone call to dispatch leg-breakers DeSalvo (Joe Mantegna) and Quinn (Paul Hipp) to Andy's address. Because an apartment number comes loose, Quinn and DeSalvo invading the wrong pad and gun down two minor crooks before finding Andy. Naturally, the gangsters don't at first believe Andy's wild story about Socrates having buried the suitcase. But they finally realize it's the truth, and set off in pursuit of the mutt. Animal Control nabs Socrates first, and while DeSalvo and Quinn try to spring the doggie, Andy and his pals catch the fever for easy money. Eventually, Andy and his friends turn on each other. With DeSalvo and Quinn breathing down their necks, will any of Andy's neighbors live long enough to enjoy the no-longer-buried treasure? Although the playful script allows each cast member a few minutes to shine, this ensemble heist flick is less successful at navigating its own circuitous plot twists. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
