This gentle, nostalgic 2000 adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Willie Morris' WWII-era boy-and-his-dog memoir rests firmly on the shoulders of the small pack of engaging Jack Russell terriers who play Skip, a true prince among pups, and they hold up their end like champs. Shy, eight-year-old Willie (Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz) has trouble making friends until Skip, unafraid of girls, grownups and graveyards as only a dog can be, changes his life without ever resorting to cliched "Timmy's fallen down the well" heroics.
