The third and finest film version of Ouida's classic children's novel of 1872 features David Ladd as Nello, a Dutch boy who wants to be a painter but seems to have no chance of ever attaining his dream. He lives with his grandfather (Donald Crisp) in Flanders, where they eke out a living by delivering milk from neighboring farms to Antwerp. They find a sickly dog and nurse it back to health, after which it becomes their cart-dog. When the grandfather dies, the boy and dog struggle to make it on their own, with the help of a kindly artist (Theodore Bikel). Filmed on location in The Netherlands and Belgium, this film was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and an award of merit from the Belgian government and won acclaim from Parents magazine. The original movie version, a silent filmed in 1924 and starring Jackie Coogan, was followed by a 1935 talkie remake featuring Frankie Thomas. leave a comment
