DOG DAY AFTERNOON
starstarstarstarstar
One of the finest films of the 1970s. In order to finance a sex-change operation for his lover, a bisexual man (Al Pacino) tries to rob the First Savings Bank of Brooklyn with the help of his moronic friend (John Cazale). Police, headed by Charles Durning, surround the bank and hold the thieves inside who, in turn, hold employees and customers as hostages. The taut, Oscar-winning script and Sidney Lumet's insightful direction highlight both the suspense and the absurdity of the situation beautifully. Read the complete review for Dog Day Afternoon
