The Doctor's Dilemma

1958, Movie, NR, 98 mins

Despite a good adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's 1903 play and an excellent cast, much of the impact of this film is lost due to the age of the play and the staleness of many of the issues. It was made in an attempt to capitalize on the enormous success of MY FAIR LADY, which came out a year earlier and made Shaw a household name. The story concerns Bogarde, an artist and a complete cad who can't resist other women. Caron is his wife, completely blind to his faults because she adores him. Bogarde falls victim to consumption, and here comes the dilemma. Caron pleads with a doctor to treat Bogarde and save his life. The doctor must decide whether to use his limited amount of serum on Bogarde or on a more worthwhile person. He finds a worthier patient and Bogarde dies, remaining a good guy in Caron's eyes. leave a comment
