A fictional account of the life of songwriter and entertainer Daniel Decatur Emmett. Crosby is the songwriter who leaves his Kentucky home to make it big in New Orleans. On a riverboat he is cheated out of all his money by card shark De Wolfe. In New Orleans, after threatening De Wolfe, Crosby becomes his friend. Crosby meets and plans to marry Lamour, but when he goes back to his hometown to tell his fiancee, Reynolds, he finds that she has polio, and he ends up marrying her. They go to New York where he sells a few of his songs, but gets little money for his efforts. No one will touch his song "Dixie." Crosby returns to New Orleans and starts the first minstrel show. He meets up with Lamour again, and Reynolds, realizing that she is just a burden for him, writes a note during one of the shows explaining that she is leaving him. Lamour finds the note and burns it, accidentally setting the theater on fire. Crosby is in the middle of singing "Dixie" and tells the band to pick up the tempo to finish before the fire grows. "Dixie" is propelled from a slow ballad to the South's inspirational theme song because of the speeded-up tempo. A well-crafted production with Crosby and Lamour in top form. This was Crosby's first color film and Mellor's color photography is breathtaking. Songs include "Sunday, Monday and Always," "If You Please," "She's from Missouri," "Kinda Peculiar Brown," "A Horse That Knows His Way Back Home," "Miss Jemima Walks By" (Jimmy Van Heusen, Johnny Burke), "Dixie" (Daniel Decatur Emmett). leave a comment
