The relationship between a black sergeant, Benjamin, and his white German wife, Pokkinen, is paralleled with a private's affair with an older woman. The sergeant is no longer in love with his wife but lacks the courage to tell her. After coming on to the private (Woods) at a party, the
fraulein kills herself. The normally despicable Woods (ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA; AGAINST ALL ODDS) is brilliant as the philosophical and cold-hearted private.
