A laborious piece of junk that takes itself too seriously and becomes preachy. Salvatori is struggling to find a job to help his mother, who is in the hospital. He takes a job as a bartender at a party held by a rich industrialist Jurgens, who can't himself attend the party because he is very sick and is throwing it only out of vanity. Salvatori hopes Jurgens will give him a job, but it doesn't happen. He then meets an old friend who has become wealthy and asks him for a loan for his mother. The friend laughs at him. A priest overhears his plight and offers help. He lets Salvatori stay at his house, which is occupied by many charity cases, most of them prostitutes, criminals, and assorted low-lifes. The priest admits that he has been defrocked, and Salvatori leaves in anger. The next day he receives a large amount of money from an unknown benefactor. He goes to the priest's house and finds that it is being torn down. The priest had sold it to aid Salvatori and his mother. Jourdan, Strasberg, and Jurgens are just passing players in this moralistic mess. leave a comment
