Although its cast is merely competent and its dialogue only serviceable, this compact made-for-cable thriller keeps you guessing throughout. Featuring a kidnapping set-piece that's beautifully orchestrated by writer-director Rob Fresco, DIRTY LITTLE SECRET takes viewers on a nerve-wracking joyride. Prominent Oregonian realtor Ellie Faver (Mary Page Keller) leads a relatively happy life with her quick-tempered husband, Sheriff Jack Faver (Jack Wagner), and their adopted ten-year-old, Charlie (Michael Suchanek). Unfortunately, Charlie's birth mom, prodigal thief Sarah Wheatley (Tracey Gold), returns to her idyllic Oregon hometown to reclaim her child. She leads partners in crime Ray (Ian Tracey), Henry (Sean Day Michael) and Chuck (Ben Cardinal) to believing they're going to kidnap Charlie for a $100,000 ransom, then snatches the boy on his way home from school. Sarah sets up a rendezvous between Charlie's parents and her accomplices, but calls Ellie in the middle of the drop and intercepts the ransom. After Sarah skips town with Charlie, headed for isolated White Deer Island, her irate crime partners tear apart their hideout and find a clue that sends them off in pursuit. Ellie and Jack initiate their own investigation, but Sarah has a secret that will strain their marriage to the breaking point. Although Fresco's script doesn't tie up all its loose ends, it features some deft narrative sleight-of-hand that skillfully foreshadows the revelations about the characters' inner demons. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
