DIRTY LAUNDRY

Obviously conceived in a pre-Viagra world, this tepid romantic comedy about male menopause is not what the doctor ordered. Dry-cleaning magnate Joey Greene (Jay Thomas) is going through a midlife crisis, facing imminent disaster on both the home and business fronts: He hasn't made love to his advice-columnist wife Beth (Tess Harper) in almost two years and a ruthless competitor is trying to buy him out. Just about the only thing that gives him any pleasure is cooking elaborate pasta dinners for his folks, Betty and Max (Tresa Hughes and Michael Marcus), who come over regularly. Beth, clearly exasperated with her hubby's lack of physical interest, tries various unsuccessful strategies to arouse him and out of desperation sleeps with hunky chiropractor Lowell (Stanley Earl Harrison), while Joey starts seeing an eccentric therapist (John Driver) whose consistently rotten advice includes suggesting that Joey get his juices going by visiting a prostitute. Beth becomes pregnant, finds Joey in an incriminating position with a sleazy woman, and begins seeing Lowell in earnest. Wacky complications ensue; it appears that they're intended to be oh-so-shocking, but they're strictly ho-hum. We never find out whether Joey rediscovers the joie de vivre he once found in conjugal duties, dry cleaning and pasta dinners, only that he and Beth are too dull to actually split up. This whole venture is a wash. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
