DIPLOMATIC SIEGE
starstarstarstar
After an American commando squad led by General Buck Swain (Tom Berenger) kidnaps Colonel Peter Vojnovic (Uwe Ochsenknecht), a Serbian war criminal, Serb nationalists promptly retaliate by seizing the US embassy in Bucharest. Fortunately for the hostages, computer whiz Steve Mitchell (Peter Weller) eludes detection by the building's heat sensors. Along with attache Erica Long (Daryl Hannah), Steve tries to neutralize the situation before Swain storms the embassy with bloody consequences. When the terrorists, led by Goran (Adrian Pintea), begin wiping out hostages, the Pentagon buys time by hiring a Vojnovic lookalike to fool the Serbs on video. Unfortunately, Steve must also defuse a nuclear weapon hidden in the embassy's basement before Goran — who may have an ally on the embassy staff — discovers both its existence and the Pentagon's deception. This far-fetched cold war thriller would've been more fun to watch had its creative personnel taken a more intentional tongue-in-cheek approach; as it is, the stars veer over the top whenever the action flags, but this comic attack seems less a desire to kid the material than an attempt to camouflage its weaknesses. Thanks to their chemistry together, Hannah and Weller's anti-extremist heroics compel attention far more than the Swain-versus-Goran contretemps. In fact, Berenger's scenes as Swain seem tacked-on for added marquee power, but far worse is the rickety script's unmasking of a truly preposterous surprise traitor. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
